Interpersonal Mediation

Conflict is an inevitable part of our personal and working lives  and if handled well can lead to positive outcomes.

When conflict is allowed to fester and communication breaks down positions can harden, meaning the problems can be felt in the wider environment.

Interpersonal Mediation can be facilitated between people who have an ongoing relationship.  This may be workplace, neighbourhood, family  or personal relationships, students and academic environments, or communities.

Prevent any unnecessary formal processes that may cause further distress, and save time, money and stress.

Involving an independent Mediator can empower individuals to communicate about what they need, knowing they are being heard by someone outside of the problem.

Be confident the Mediation is being carried out by a qualified professional (IMI Registered) with a wealth of experience and knowledge with suited  personal attributes.

Mediation is an impartial, voluntary and confidential process which can be facilitated with individuals.  It may also be used where there is conflict within  or between teams.

A Mediator can assist individuals in conflict by guiding them through a conversation to reach an outcome that works for each of them. This approach is more likely to result in long lasting positive relationships than a formal process, whereby a mutual agreement may not be achieved or outcomes accepted.

We will guide you through the process to address any conflict between individuals, groups or teams.

Concessions will be made for multiple bookings and charity organisations. Full terms and conditions will be provided following an initial evaluation of options.

What happens next?

We aim to set up the Mediation as soon as possible, so issues can be addressed before anything escalates further.

Following a referral we will liaise with the referrer to ensure Mediation is a suitable option and make the necessary arrangements.

The Mediator will meet with each individual separately before continuing to a joint meeting.

Usually a Mediation takes place over one day with the individual meetings held in the morning and the joint meeting in the afternoon. We appreciate time and resources may impact on this format, so can offer some flexibility.

Depending on the complexity of the case, additional one to one meetings may be suggested.  The aim of this is to help individuals explore their own responses to conflict so that they may have a more constructive conversation in the joint meeting.

The aim of the Mediation is for individuals to agree some actions or outcomes that work for each of them. The Mediator is skilled in recognising language patterns and helping individuals identify underlying needs to aid connection and focus on future behaviours. Those in the conflict may wish to generate a written agreement they can refer back to or share with the referrer.

The Mediator will follow up with the individuals or the referrer in an agreed timescale to evaluate progress and consider any further support.

Multi-Party Mediation

Conflict may be at play between more than two individuals within or between groups or teams. There may be a specific problem, or several issues impacting on the wider environment, such as performance or morale in the workplace.

Mediation can assist individuals within a team / group to work in collaboration with their peers and move past the presenting issues.

The Mediator will meet with each individual involved in the dispute separately. Where there are four or more disputants, the Mediation will take place over two days or more. For large team Mediation two Mediators may be in attendance to co-facilitate the process.

Fees are based on a day rate.  Full terms and conditions will be provided following an initial assessment. Individuals quotes will be provided depending on format and need.

Conflict Coaching

Where a conversation is not required or able to be had between two or more parties, conflict coaching may be suitable for individuals.

Often we can feel aggrieved in a situation and not fully understand why.  How we respond to conflict is governed by our values and beliefs, as well as how well we manage our emotions. The root of these factors can be deeply unconscious.  We all have filters through which we experience the world and we don't have to pay too much attention to them, because they become automatic.

Conflict coaching assists individuals to gain insight by identifying patterns in thinking and behaviours that contribute to conflict situations. It can help them identify skills and strategies to have better conversations and ultimately feel more at ease about addressing issues.

Conflict Coaching may be accessed for a number of reasons such as;

  • To explore what to do about a dispute.
  • To consider strategies and approaches to managing an ongoing conflict.
  • To prepare for an interaction that may be challenging.
  • To consider how to approach a situation that may escalate.
  • To prepare for a presentation which may generate challenging reactions.
  • To prepare for Mediation or some other form of dispute resolution.
